How a trailing drawdown works
With a static drawdown the floor never moves. With a trailing drawdown the floor sits a fixed amount below your highest equity, so every new high pushes it up. It never moves back down, even after a losing streak.
Many futures-style firms stop trailing once the floor reaches your starting balance. From then on your drawdown behaves like a static one. Others trail forever, which makes protecting profits far more important.
Why floating profit matters
When the drawdown trails equity, an open trade that runs into profit and then reverses can raise your floor without you ever closing a winner. That is the most common way traders lose a funded account "while in profit".
