How prop firms calculate the daily loss limit

Most firms define the daily loss as a percentage of your initial account size, not your current balance. On a $100,000 account with a 5% rule you may lose $5,000 per day, even if the account has grown to $108,000.

What changes between firms is the reference the limit is subtracted from. Some use the balance at the daily reset, others the equity, and some the higher of the two. Floating losses on open trades count against the limit in all common cases, which is why traders get surprised by a breach while a position is still open.

When does the daily loss reset?

Each firm resets at a fixed time in its own time zone, often midnight in the firm's server time (for example CE(S)T for several European firms). A position held across the reset carries its floating P&L into the new day's reference when the firm uses equity.

Presets are a starting point. Rules change: always confirm with your firm's current terms.
